Day193 - Women, now and then.

Friday, July 11, 2008: My living room: The Women.

I heard a lot about this movie a few months ago when it was announced it would be made over with Meg Ryan in the lead roll once played my Norma Shearer in the 1939 George Cukor classic. I love Cukor movies, especially and most of all "The Philadelphia Story." His movies usually have some arcane idea of how women should act socially, but the story telling is wonderful as is the acting, so you get over it quick enough.

And Rosalind Russell! Well, I love her a lot. She is perhaps one of my favorite actress of all time. "His Girl Friday" is another all time favorite movie. Both have Cary Grant, and there is no coincidence there.

I like this movie fine. There are absolutely no men in it, which is just amazing if you really think about it. I found the story a little irritating, but I guess it is appropriate for the time and place.

I think I would like to see the remake - they did good by choosing Annette Bening for Rosalind Russell's role, Even Mendes for Joan Crawford not so much - and I'm all about giving my money to another cast that is comprised of all women. An all lady cast is more of a tough sell these days then it was 70 years ago.
