So, we watched The Secret tonight. Perhaps you might have heard of it as it has been everywhere on the news in 2007. I've had the video probably since June of last year. Maybe longer. I just pushed back watching it a little as I picked up all the high points from Oprah. The show, not the person. We aren't tight like that.
Some thoughts I had while watching it:
"Nice production values."
"I bet this had a high budget."
"I wonder if the actors got a copy of the book as payment?"
A small synopsis: The Secret is the law of Attraction that has been around for centuries. It's not a big secret at all, actually. It's just nicely packaged and marketed here for you. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I get paid from marketing and packaging. Packaging is kind of my life.
There is a good bit in there about how we are all, at the smallest level, atoms and that everything is connected. I'm sure that if more dictators, murderers, evil presidents thought about that, we would have fewer wars. It is a really nice thought actually.
3 steps to The Secret:
- Ask
- Believe
- Receive
This is where the positive thinking comes in.
You also must spend a lot of time visualizing what you want and having gratitude for what you already have.
They had one scientist on there who, when speaking about your past and anything negative in it, also the haters that tell you The Secret is shit, "All that bad stuff is called, 'So what!'"
That is now my favorite saying. Mostly because it's true.
Now, the movie does talk a lot about wealth, which they skew towards the financial. I grew up poor, so that shit doesn't mean anything to me. I am ingrained to know that money doesn't mean anything - you can still be a miserable asshole if you have money, you will just be a miserable asshole paying more in taxes.
From watching a few different shows on Oprah with the cast of The Secret expounding on their original thoughts, I gathered more on what they consider wealth.
Wealth in your life is determined by having harmony in the following:
Financial
Relational
Intellectual
Spiritual
Physical
This I agree on. It's true you should be content in all these areas. None I think are more important that the other, as a matter of fact I just tried to rank them an could not.
If you need to know what you need to have completeness in these areas, write a list of what you don't want for yourself and then do the opposite.
Another question you should ask yourself is "What do I intend to create?" I hope goodness.
Something that you should chant to yourself often is:
"I am available to more greatness than I imagined, experienced or realized before."
That is powerful and an awesome thought.
Also, on the topic of forgiveness which is important because I'm still pissed that my ex-boyfriend owes me $500 bucks:
"Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could be different."
Smart and true.
I agree with most of what the dvd and the participants have to say, if only from my own life and experiences of what positivity can do for you. Over the spring and summer, when I was at the height of positivity, when I would think something like, "I wish so and so would call." it would happen. Or if I wanted an experience, the experience would present itself. It's kind of scary at first but exhilarating.
But the business of the fall and world events slowed me down a bit and I noticed recently that I was becoming more negative. And good stuff wasn't happening as often or with much veracity.
So I'm rerouting my thoughts. Not just because I saw some video, but because being chilled out makes me happy.
And being truly grateful for what you have makes you less likely to blow a load of money at the mall. Or Ikea. Or Amazon.
Being positive doesn't cost a dime. And it's relaxing.
Last month some jerk hit my car and screwed up my bumper which I didn't realize until later that night. I was sad for a minute and cursed a bit, but truthfully I really don't care. Me being mad doesn't help anybody or anything and being grouchy certainly doesn't help my relationship with Troy. No one is happy except the jerk that got away. AND NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR THE SOB STORY ABOUT THE BUMPER. Trust me, you probably didn't make it through that paragraph.
So this year you may find me happier than usual. And if I'm not tell me to chill out. But I don't think I'll need the reminder.
