I started a new book today. It is called The Summoner by Gail Z. Martin and it is Book One of the Chronicles of The Necromancer.
My neighbor let me borrow it way back in September and I have finally, finally got around to reading it. In September I read 1984 and it was a BUMMER, so I've been sticking to magazines about Macs and Readymade - cheery stuff.
She promised that this was the next big thing after Harry Potter while we were commiserating about how sad we are that the final book has been written and published.
This is no Harry Potter.
This really isn't a good alternative to The Vampire Lestat, which I would kind of rather read.
I'm about a fifth of the way through the 650 or so pages and most of the back story has been told and the plot is underway. The book uses a lot of religion, granted a fake religion, but I'm a little turned off by the religiosity of it all. I mean, there is somewhat of a twist because of the ghosts, and the main character is somewhat of a wizard, or "mage" as they are called in the book. But if they switched out "goddess" for Jesus or Buddha or whatever, I wouldn't have bothered to even get past the first 10 pages. It's just not my thing.
As I believe in a separation of church and state, I believe is a separation of church and literature. It's just not entertainment for me. At. All.
But at least I'm reading something more substantial than the latest Consumer Report, which I would like to do instead. Hopefully by page 300 this sucker will pick up. Fingers crossed.
